I don't even know how much I'll have to say, especially since I've been reading it for ages now.it was something like 46+ hours of audiobook. I also liked the historical, political and cultural references, for example the Hundred Days War or the life of Ali Pasha. It also had some interesting side characters like Caderousse and Eugénie Danglars, who was the only self-determined woman in the book. I did not want him to succeed and I do not begrudge him the happy ending.Īll in all, the story is well written and had many exciting moments. The Count has no self-reflection, but is a self-righteous, megalomaniacal asshole. (No one can blame him.) Instead, he believes that he is doing God's will and that all his actions are wanted by God and are therefore good and just. He doesn't admit to having a personal vendetta. What bothered me most was the Count's motivation. Instead, the count enters a romance with his slave, Haydée, for whom he previously had only fatherly feelings. Mercédès dies alone, to restore her honor. I have constantly confused Madame de Villefort and Madame Danglars. The female characters look pale and interchangeable, even though they actually play an important role. Nevertheless, the book has some weaknesses that left a bland aftertaste. The count played more of a catalytic role in his revenge. I liked the fact that the antagonists were actually not punished by the count, but that their own actions led to their downfall. Besides, only uneventful meetings and conversations of exchangeable nobles take place. Here a character, Franz d'Epinay, is introduced very long and in detail, who will hardly play a role later on. The second third is kinda boring and has no real connection to the actual story. But predictability is a general problem of this book. Everything seems so perfect that it can only end in a catastrophe. The first third is exciting, but also very predictable.
